With the objectives of promoting Amateur (Ham) Radio technology in Nepal, enhancing the technical skills of radio operators, and inspiring them to serve the nation through emergency communication during disasters, the "1st Fox Hunting Competition" (Radio Direction Finding - RDF) was organized on June 21, 2025.
Held in the dense forest area of Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, this historic competition saw enthusiastic participation from various ham radio operators and radio enthusiasts. Organized even prior to the formal establishment of the Nepal Amateur Radio Club (NARC), this event contributed significantly to bringing Nepali ham operators onto a single platform, providing practical training in Radio Direction Finding (RDF), and raising awareness about the vital role of radio technology in disaster management.
In this competition, where participants used directional antennas and receivers to track down a hidden radio signal ("Fox Transmitter") within the forest, Senior Ham Operator Mr. Suresh upreti (9N2HA) played a mentorship role, providing direct guidance and direction. His invaluable experience and technical advice injected new enthusiasm and energy into the participants.
In an exciting contest navigated through dense wilderness and geographical challenges, the following operators demonstrated exceptional skill to emerge as winners:
1st (Winner): Mr. Deb Shing Aeri
2nd (First Runner-up): Mr. Gelee Sherpa (9N2GS)
3rd (Second Runner-up): Mr. Prabesh Rumba (9N2PL)
Radio Direction Finding is considered extremely useful in search and rescue operations during disasters to locate missing persons or emergency signals. This first successful exercise on June 21, 2025, served as a strong foundation for the subsequent formation of the club (NARC) and the institutional growth of the ham radio sector in Nepal.
The overall management and technical coordination of the event were handled by Mr. Nabin Kumar Poudel (9N2NK). Thanks to his excellent managerial skills and technical preparation, the competition was completed in a highly engaging and disciplined manner.
