Quick start · Your first FT8 message
- Enter your callsign and four-character grid locator, then choose CQ.
- Download a WAV to inspect the encoded signal before connecting a radio.
- For a radio test, select its audio output and a transmit slot. Keep your computer clock synchronised.
This tool encodes and plays FT8 audio and displays a receive spectrum. It does not decode incoming FT8 messages. Invalid callsigns or message formats show guidance next to the message.
For NARC members with Radio Lab access
The FT8 encoder and transmitter is part of the full Radio Lab, available to approved members once an administrator grants access. Morse code learning and practice stay free for everyone.
Tiny bandwidth
Each signal uses 8 tones spaced 6.25 Hz apart — dozens of stations share a 3 kHz channel.
Works below the noise
Strong forward error correction decodes signals down to about −20 dB SNR.
Time-synchronised
Stations transmit in alternating 15-second UTC slots, so accurate clocks matter.
